data backup, security and recovery - dds rescue
Data back and security/recovery is becoming more and more of a problem for the dental practice. I recently was having a conversation with a dentist about the issue of ransom ware and server failures, it was brushed off as not a concern they had their necessary backups and that "ransom ware" wasn't an issue around here . Literally a couple days later a customer called me to ask what their next steps should be, they had just been hacked with ransomware. They had a backup but unfortunately it was not up to date, so there was quite a bit of time and money to get everything back up and running, never mind the lost production from down time, it's never ask quick as you'd think to get back up and running! If you are producting $3-5k per day, you could be looking at $15k in lost production in addition to your IT companies fees.
There was an office north of Boston that got their database hijacked with ransomware that was held for a very large sum of money, tens of thousands! There is nothing you can do even with law enforcement involved. This office didn't have a secure backup for data which made the problem exponentially worse!
The more common problems that are a threat every day is server/hard drive failure. Ask your IT company how quickly they can guarantee you will be up and running if you had a server failure. Then calculate what you produce every day and what that will cost you in production. Computers fail, they all do, yours will fail one day, you just need to know what the plan is when it goes down.
What I want you to get out of this is this, think of this as an insurance policy, it's like a defibrilator, you pray you never need to take it out, but if that one patient drops in your office you don't want to be answering questions on why you didn't have one!
Consider this as a real threat, have a protocol in place for a hack or server failure, know exactly what your next steps are so you can minimize the down time and lost production!
